June 1, 2011: Visiting KBR by Bryce Boone

Today we visited the offices of KBR Inc. (also known as Kellogg, Brown and Root) in Leatherhead, UK. The group met at the subway station bright and early: 7am! We then took the subway to the above ground train that would take us 45 minutes out of the city and into Leatherhead. When we arrived in Leatherhead, we encountered a small problem. The tickets that they gave us were for June the 30th, instead of June the 1st. By the time we sorted everything out we had missed our bus to take us to the campus of KBR! Lucky our host Patrick informed us that it would only be a 15 minute walk. We then went through the intense security and were seated in a conference room. After presentations about KBR’s oil and gas sector, we then had to tell them a little about ourselves and Texas A&M. It was interesting and fun to interact with multiple employees and company heads. The difference in education and job placement out of college is incredibly diverse. Luckily, KBR asked us a lot of questions and it was fun to explain our internship experiences and academic accomplishments. After our talk, we broke for lunch. During lunch, we met KBR’s Impact team and this was a great time to meet people. After lunch we heard a little more about the International Defense and Power sector of KBR. We were awed by the different amount of industries the company is involved in. They do things from building offshore oil rigs to feeding USA and UK troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Clearly, the company is a leader in innovation and technology. They also have 40,000 employees worldwide with 2,000 of them at Leatherhead. After the presentations, we were escorted onto the bus and made it back to the train station with no problem. When we got back to London we were treated to a great dinner by FIE (our student housing company). They took us out to a Japanese style restaurant. It was one of the best meals yet.
